Overview of this course
Congratulations on registering and welcome!
This course will help you to plan for and deliver successful place-based projects.
When you focus on people and places, you do many things differently. This includes project leadership and management.
Too often, we rush to finish a project, only to see it not funded, opposed by the local community, subject to cost blowouts and/or forgotten in a fast-moving world.
Conventional project management methods are generally designed for and well-suited to capital works and infrastructure-focused projects. But, these approaches don't always work well in more social, complex and fluid situations, such as main street revitalisation, neighborhood improvement, economic development and community building.
Places should influence projects, rather than projects influencing places.
This course:
- Explains how the 'placemaking mindset' can help you to plan for and manage your project
- Provides ideas on how to better diagnose the real problems or opportunities you are working on
- Summarises some of the key skills needed in place-based projects
- Compares the conventional 'masterplanning' approach with the agile, iterative 'Strategic Doing' approach
- Looks at key project management concepts such as time, cost, quality and scope
- Warns of some common mistakes to avoid
It will help program and project delivery across a variety of disciplines, including project management, urban design, economic development, events, activation, community development, urban planning, tourism, arts, engineering, infrastructure, sustainability and more.
If you are not familiar with placemaking, you might want to do a quick crash course -Creating Great Places in 12 Minutes before starting this course. It will help you to better understand this course.
