Course Overview and Learning Guide

Welcome!

In the technology age, it is easy to forget about the importance of physical geography. People are usually rooted to the place they love. We all need to live, work and play in places.

In multicultural modern societies, ‘Place’ can be an important way to bring together different cultures, language groups, lifestyles and beliefs. It can be a way to break down barriers and start conversations.

But, many places are unsafe, unsocial, uncomfortable and unhealthy. Too many places negatively affect our mood, health, prosperity and social connections. They are not 'human habitats'.

Placemaking is about bringing different people, organisations and disciplines together to create positive changes in a place or area. Not only can this improve the way a place looks and feels, it can improve our the way we view ourselves, our neighbours and our role in the world. It fosters active citizenship. Local people can shape their communities by what they do, not just by how they spend or who they vote for.

We have created this course to be accessible to anyone just like you!, including professionals, local businesses and people who want to improve their community.

Dean Cracknell, the curator of the course, welcomes you in the short video below.

Ethan Kent, Executive Director of PlacemakingX also welcomes you in the video below. He provides a bit more background on the placemaking movement.
